Although its only natural to want to dedicate truckloads of time to your spouse and children, studies show that without regular exercise, balanced nutrition and focused attention on self, adults can quickly begin to suffer from “family burnout”. Mum’s tend to sacrifice more personal time than Dad’s do, so Mum’s you’ll need to work even harder to look after yourselves!

Not leaving time for exercise not only means that you don’t get a chance to physically let off steam, it also means you don’t get that extra rush of feel-good endorphin after your session.

Poor nutrition ends with your brain lacking the necessary cocktail of chemicals to work with to manage and stabilize your mood. This means that you can lose your temper with your crying newborn, or raise your voice at your preschooler’s never-ending questioning.

Although sometimes, the last thing you feel you have time for is a solitary massage, nail spa or a cup of coffee, but that time dedicated to nurturing yourself can often be the daily dose that gives you the energy to begin the process all over again the next day.

Dedicating time to yourself not only gives you some time to read; reflect or just space out, and it can also reduce the chances of you feeling resentful towards your family when things don’t go the smoothest. When family chaos surrounds you, it’s easy to think to yourself, “I sacrifice so much for all of you and this is what I get in return?” but spending self-dedicated time highlights that you are also an essential and important part of the family that needs care and concern.

Getting your spouse, parents and children to support you on this endeavor is the next step. Once they encourage and support you on this front, you will feel even more cherished and appreciated, leading you to even more energetic family time!
