5 REASONS TO STEP AWAY FROM YOUR SCREENS

Author: admin Date: Aug 23, 2016
  1. YOUR EYES NEEDS TO BLINK

Looking at a computer screen for a while causes some changes in how the eyes work. As a result, we will blink less often and our eye surfaced will be more exposed to the air.

THE RESULT:

Computer Vision Syndrome: Symptoms include eye pain and fatigue, blurred vision, redness in the eyes and the need to blink more or close your eyes more often.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Briefly look away from your screen every 15 minutes at a distant object for a minute or two, or close your eyes to allow muscles inside the eye to relax. If your eyes are dry, consider using lubricating eye drops.

  1. PREVENTING “SPIDEY” LEGS
Sitting too long leads to poor circulation in your legs and tightening of hips.

THE RESULT:
Swelling in your ankles, varicose veins, and blood clots known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Hips may become tight and limited in motion that will affect stability and the power of your stride when walking and jumping.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Take rest breaks every 30 to 60 minutes by moving around and do something else. Go and get a drink. This allows you to rest and exercise different muscles.

  1. NO MORE WEIGHT GAIN
Sitting down after eating causes your abdominal contents to compress and in turn slowing down digestion.

Sluggish digestion can lead to cramping, bloating, heartburn, and constipation. Decreased muscle contractions can also slow the clearance of fat from the blood stream and decreases the effect of insulin.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Why not consider using a standing desk or having a 10 – 20min walk after your meal? Having a walk helps to burn off some unwanted calories to keep within your ideal weight range.

4

  1. “HUNCHBACK” NO MORE
Sitting in front of screen for long hours at work could cause a number of people tend hunch forward unknowingly.

THE RESULT:
This can lead to strains to the related muscles, which can lead to neck strain, sore shoulders and back.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Stand up and perform some stretching on your neck, shoulder and back. Do not forget to adjust your posture when you return to your desk later.

5

  1. FEELING ISOLATED WITH REDUCED SOCIAL SKILLS
“Talking” to the computer as the single form of communication is a paradox as it is a social technology that reduces social involvement and psychological well-being.
